As U.S. consumers tackle ways to keep themselves and their families busy, active, and fit during this time of social distancing, sports and home fitness equipment as well as children’s and adult leisure bicycles have seen double- and triple-digit sales increases, according to retail sales data from The NPD Group.
With gyms and fitness centers closed, consumers have adopted at-home exercise routines, propelling a +130% rise in fitness equipment sales and all its categories including cardio machines, free weight equipment, home gym weight machines, strength training products, and yoga and Pilates essentials. A number of segments experienced triple-digit gains including weight benches (+259%), free weights (+181%), stationary bikes (+170%), and yoga mats (+146%).
Ebay Sales Data on Fitness Products
According to eBay.com, Between March and April of 2020, online sales of fitness equipment increased up to 20 times in some categories compared to the same timeframe 2019.
Comparing March and April sales in 2019 for dumbbells with sales during the same period in 2020 we can see an increase of 1980% according to eBay sales data; meanwhile weight plate sales have increased by 1355% in the same period too.
Average Expenditure on Fitness Equipment
The amount spent on Fitness Equipment also increased between 2019 and 2020, according to the eBay.com data. Customers spent $110 on Fitness Equipment, 75% more purchases than previous year.
Home Fitness App Users
According to E-marketer forecast, the number of US smartphone users using health and fitness apps increased by 27.2%, from 68.7 million in 2019 to 87.4 million in 2020.
Although this figure may slightly decrease in 2021, the rapid adoption of telehealth services and health/fitness apps during the pandemic may leave a lasting impact.
It is anticipated that the number of health and fitness app users in US will stay above 84 million through 2022.
